Two-thirds of the way through this 1970 James Brown single, drummer Clyde Stubblefield played a roughly twenty-second break that became one of the most sampled recordings in history — the spine of countless hip-hop, jungle and pop records. Every song below draws on it. The uncomfortable footnote, documented on Stubblefield’s own page, is that he was never credited or paid for the break he improvised.
