Rodgers and Edwards’ earlier group, the Big Apple Band, had to rename itself after Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” was mistakenly credited to “Walter Murphy and The Big Apple Band” — forcing the pair to rebrand as “Chic,” deliberately choosing a short, one-syllable name.
